Dante Gabriel Rossetti's 'Rosamond'

The Pre-Raphaelite painters adored the Fair Rosamond story, with major works by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John William Waterhouse (here), Arthur Hughes and others (you can see those here).

Below is Rossetti's Rosamond (1861), hiding out in the royal manor of Woodstock. Note the red silk cord in her hand, by which she would know if Henry was on his way. The model here is Fanny Cornforth, whom Rossetti often used. She became his housekeeper after the death of his wife Elizabeth Siddall in 1862.

Below is Rossetti's The Bower Meadow of 1872, which I associate with Rosamond.

One of Rossetti's models was Marie Spartali Stillman, who would become a great painter in her own right. In keeping with the "woman trapped in the garden" theme, below is The Enchanted Garden of Messer Ansaldo, inspired by a story in Boccaccio's The Decameron.

Spartali's cousin, Maria Zambaco, was also a model and muse for the pre-Raphaelites (mainly Edward Burne-Jones) as well as a painter in her own right - here.
