Chapbooks

Chapbooks were the original "street literature" or pop culture from the 16th century onwards, and they often were read aloud since not enough people knew how to read. They were called chapbooks because they were sold by peddlers known as "chapmen" - usually printed on single sheets stitched together to form small books. This one shown is from 1755.
