Nicholas Roerich's 'Joan of Arc'
Nicholas Roerich's Joan of Arc triptych, shown below, is from 1931. Joan and the French armies are on the right, the English enemies on the left and the Virgin Mother and Christ mediating in the middle. Above is a detail showing Joan burning at the stake.
Roerich (1874-1947), one of the greatest Russian painters, was also a mystic who was fascinated by Joan or Arc and other mystics saints such as Teresa of Avila, Saint Catherine of Siena, Saint Francis of Assisi as well as the great Russian saints. Indeed his wife Helena seemed to him to be a reincarnation of Joan of Arc and many of these women. For more on Roerich, here.
